HALEYVILLE - A 4-1 vote by the Haleyville Board of Education approved the continuation of HHS Principal Davey Reed’s contract effective July 1 and running through June 30, 2026.
During the board’s regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 19, board member Donna Jones made a motion to approve Reed’s contract renewal, with Boo Haughton seconding the motion. Voting in favor were Jones, Haughton, Beth McAlpine and Kris Burleson, with Board President Chad Tidwell casting the no vote, but the motion carried on the 4-1 vote.
Tidwell was asked by the Alabamian to comment on the reason for his lone no vote, but Tidwell responded, “I have no comment.”
Superintendent Dr. Holly Sutherland, who had recommended the new contract to the board for consideration, stressed that Reed has done a great job leading Haleyville High School, being a hard worker focused on readying students for college and careers.
“While other schools have shown declines or level performance academically over the last three years, HHS has shown growth and remained focused on student achievement,” Sutherland said.
Sutherland commended Reed on leading an amazing team, with Assistant Principal Candy Garner and Center of Technology Director/Assistant Principal John McCullar building strong relationships with staff and students.
“Consistency is key when looking at a school’s growth and stability,” Sutherland continued, “and we are blessed to have had a strong leadership team at HHS over the past few years.
“We congratulate Mr. Reed and his staff on a job well done,” she added, “and look forward to even higher levels of achievement moving forward.”
Newest board member Haughton said HCS will be well served by renewing Reed’s contract.
“Mr. Reed exhibits the class and leadership we expect from our administrators,” Haughton said.
Burleson added she was excited to renew Reed’s contract.
“The role of the high school principal requires a lot of time and responsibility,” Burleson said. “He has done an exceptional job leading HHS.”
McAlpine pointed out Reed has been a great asset to HCS.
“The students, administrators, faculty and staff all seem to view him as a hands-on leader for HHS,” McAlpine stated.
Reed’s salary
specified, not listed
directly in contract
The new contract for Reed stipulates, under the category of salary, that his salary be in accordance with the salary schedule established by the board, with Reed agreeing to abide by the rules, regulations and policies of the board.
Reed’s salary and any adjustments would be reflected in any year in which the Alabama Legislature enacted a pay raise for all public school teachers and any subsequent action taken by the board in response to that legislation, according to a copy of Reed’s contract.
