Recreation season begins in Bankhead

BANKHEAD NATIONAL FOREST -  The USDA Forest Service is announcing  the opening of the recreation season throughout Alabama’s four national forests, including Bankhead.
There is an assortment of recreational activities for outdoor enthusiasts, and the Forest Service is asking the public to plan their trip to have the best outdoor experience.
According to Tammy Freeman Brown, USDA Forest Service public affairs staff officer, the Forest Service manages developed campgrounds and dispersed recreation activities in Alabama’s national forests.  With more than 368 designated trails and 28 developed campgrounds, there’s a lot to explore. “Spring is a great time to connect with nature,” said Brown.  “If you are planning to have a more active lifestyle, an outdoor recreation activity in a national forest is a good place to start.”
A few dispersed recreation opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, camping, fishing, boating, water-play, birdwatching, horse riding, swimming, plus more.  Some of the developed campgrounds have modern amenities that have water, electrical hook-ups and bathrooms.  The Forest Service website has a listing of recreation sites and fees. Visitors are encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles . Remember to pack trash out after a campground stay, stay on designated trails, and respect wildlife and other visitors.

The Bankhead, Conecuh, Talladega, and Tuskegee national forests are working forests.  Throughout various times of the year, visitors can expect to see controlled burns, tree thinning, tree planting, and other management activities. The projects focus on maintaining the health and resilience of national forests while at the same time providing products and services to the public.
