WINSTON COUNTY - Winston County is being put back on the map in a big way, with a focus on tourism, thanks to the recent Pitching for Promotion Dollars contest sponsored by the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourism Association.
Kristi Bain, director of the Winston County Economic Development Authority, was one of the winners selected after pitching a program about the Looney’s Tavern Cultural and Entertainment Center, which officially opens to the public for their summertime concert series this weekend.
Bain, at the request of Winston County Arts Council President J.D. Snoddy, talked about the redevelopment of the Looney’s Putt Putt golf course, which was part of the original Looney’s Tavern complex, which was left vacant after closing several years ago.
The Looney’s park and grounds, however, are being brought back to life, thanks to community support, grants and donations received by the Arts Council, which purchased the Looney’s site and are renovating the park in stages.
Stage 1 was renovation of the Dual Destiny Theatre which has been completed in time for the opening live act of Majestic Journey Tribute Band which will have shows on Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, each night 8 p.m.
