HCS Superintendent candidates have wealth of experience

HALEYVILLE - The Haleyville Board of Education is conducting interviews with the top 5 candidates for school superintendent this week.
The Alabamian was provided information about each candidate’s professional background and education.  The information is presented below:

Dr. Veronica R. Bayles

Bayles is currently the director of curriculum and instruction for the Tuscumbia Board of Education.  Prior to her current position, she was principal of G.W. Trenholm Primary School in Tuscumbia; assistant principal/curriculum, AP coordinator and instructional partner for Lawrence County High School; ARI reading coach/instructional coach at R.A. Hubbard High School near Courtland  and an elementary teacher at both R. A. Hubbard School and Powell Elementary School, in Florence.
Bayles’ earned her doctor of education in educational leadership from Samford University; her educational specialist degree  and master’s degree  education instructional leadership from UNA  and a master’s in education curriculum and instruction: reading from Grand Canyon University.


Dr. William “Bill” Bishop

Bishop currently serves as director of administrative services for Haleyville City Schools.  Prior to this position, he was the Haleyville Center of Technology director and principal; assistant principal at Haleyville High School; University of Alabama ACCESS virtual learning instructor, Spanish teacher and coach at HHS; Spanish teacher and coach for Marion County Schools and a substitute teacher for Franklin County Schools.
Bishop has a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Alabama.  He earned his education specialist degree in educational leadership from the University of Alabama -Birmingham and his  master’s in Spanish secondary education from the University of Alabama.

Amy Childress

Before her most recent position as superintendent of Scottsboro City Schools, Childress  was assistant superintendent of federal programs and curriculum at Scottsboro City Schools, principal and athletic director at  Asbury High School in Albertville; assistant principal of Asbury Elementary School in Albertville; AR reading specialist and a teacher in Marshall County Schools.
Childress’ degrees include  an educational specialist in educational leadership from the University of Alabama- Birmingham; a aster’s degree in educational leadership, from Western Governor’s University; a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of North Alabama and a bachelor’s, degree in English from the University of Alabama.

Dr. Heidi Knapp

Knapp is currently director of programs for the Brewton City Board of Education.  Prior to this, she was an assistant principal at Brewton Elementary School; ARI reading coach and a teacher at Brewton Elementary and a teacher at  W.S. Neal Elementary in East Brewton.
Knapp’s degrees include a doctorate in educational leadership from Liberty University; a master’s degree in  educational leadership from the University of South Alabama; and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of South Alabama.

Dr. Brian K. Thomas

Thomas currently serves as assistant superintendent and chief of staff for the DeKalb County Board of Education.  Prior to this, he was an  elementary teacher in DeKalb County Schools; site coordinator, The Giving Tree--21st Century project, DeKalb County; special projects coordinator, at Cherokee Hosiery in Fort Payne and a project assistant for the William C. Gorgas Center for Geographic Medicine at UAB.
Thomas’ degrees include a doctorate in rural education from the University of West Alabama; education specialist degree in instructional leadership from Jacksonville State University; a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Alabama and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Athens State University.
