Public meeting regarding upcoming redistricting Sept. 15 in Hanceville

WINSTON COUNTY - The Alabama Legislature is constitutionally required to draw new congressional and state legislative distrct boundaries the year after a census is taken, and public hearings are being held across the state so residents can make their voices heard on how these lines should be drawn.

Meaning behind words: examining our National Anthem

To my own embarrassment, a recent event afforded me a few moments to do something I had not done in quite some time--contemplate the words and meaning of our National Anthem. Invited to sing our anthem at the Marion County School System teacher in-service event in August, I actually listened to the words for the first time in what seemed an eternity. As the words flowed across my lips and those in attendance stood at attention, the words had meaning like never before.

HALEYVILLE - The upcoming meet-and-greet event with Winston County’s team of state legislators will be unlike any in the past.

New park planned

DOUBLE SPRINGS   -  Many in Winston County may take the name Double Springs for granted as the county’s seat, while others through the years have questioned the origin of its name.
The  donation of  half an acre of land from BankFirst to the Town of Double Springs will be used for a park to celebrate the history of the town -- which received its name from  natural dual springs of water located in the area where the park will be located off Highway 195.

Park improvements near completion

A portion of the track is paved at the Mike Gilbreath Memorial Park in Double Springs. A part still unpaved can be seen above the asphalt in the photo. Though still closed, the construction company will have the park completed soon.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Damage to the walking track at Mike Gilbreath Memorial Park, due to time, weather and roots, caused the park to be closed in February of this year for renovations. According to reports at the town meeting Monday, Sept. 14, the repaving of the track and lighting are the only issues left to complete before the park reopens.

The State of Alabama is losing--and losing quite badly, as if our state were one of the perennial cupcakes found on the schedule for Southeastern Conference teams in the fall. The deadline to respond to the census is Sept. 30 and a substantial portion of our state has failed to take the five minutes necessary to answer a few basic questions.
