Genealogical society publishes fifth volume

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Many long hours have gone into saving the history of Winston County, with as many long hours working to present this information in an easier format to perform research. The Winston County Genealogical Society at the Winston County Archives is the go-to organization for the county’s history. They have recently published the fifth book in their “Winston Roots” series, which began 10 years ago.

A forgotten cemetery located

RABBITTOWN - Winston County has many well-known cemeteries, including large ones such as Winston Memorial, but the Winston County Genealogical Society considers one lone grave a cemetery, and a new one has been located, which contains at least two, possibly three graves.

Dodd is winner in scavenger quest

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Faye Dodd of Haleyville was the winner in the Free State Scavenger Quest, held through the month of September. The drawing was held at the Winston County Archives on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Dodd is shown holding a gift bag containing “Cooked on Smith Lake” from the Arley Women’s Club, and presenting it is Winston County Genealogical Society President Dianne Miller. Dodd also received three volumes of “Winston Roots” and a historical book on Haleyville, along with a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart, a $25 gift certificate to Gateway, a year’s subscription to the Northwest Alabamian and a year’s subscription to the WCGS.

From Sage Brush to 911: How Haleyville Began first edition now available

HALEYVILLE - The long awaited project of compiling a book solely about the city of Haleyville has come to fruition with the release of From Sage Brush to 911: How Haleyville Began, a book full of history and pictures now available for purchase.

Byler Road Tour will be recognized Alabama 200 event

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Joel Mize, guest speaker at the Feb. 20, Winston County Genealogical Society meeting in Double Springs, is preparing a guided convoy tour for historic Byler Road on Saturday, Mar. 17, nearly 200 years after its inception.
