Proposed lodging tax has commissioners unsettled

WINSTON COUNTY - A proposed lodging tax for Winston County did not get off the ground at the Winston County Commission’s Tuesday, Jan. 21, meeting, when action on the tax failed due to a disagreement among commissioners over how the tax proceeds will be divided.

Military voting begins for Nov. 9, special election

WINSTON COUNTY - The process of absentee voting for military personnel started today in preparation for the Nov. 9, special election, which will ask voters to decide whether to renew five mills of property tax benefiting both Winston County and Haleyville City school systems.

WINSTON COUNTY - Sales tax may have taken a dip due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but the resulting increase in taxes related to internet purchases is benefiting school systems for the first time, and in a big way.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - The long standing question as to if the Winston County Commission could use the entirety of ad valorem taxes authorized under Section 215.02 of the Recompiled Constitution of Alabama to fund a public hospital operating other medical clinics, has finally been resolved by an Attorney General’s opinion received July 24.
