Restrictions eased on county roads Tuesday afternoon; CR 60 closed.

The Winston County Roads have been removed from impassable condition and are now under advisory condition.  County Road 60 is closed due to downed trees, stated Winston County Commissioner David  Cummings.  . Please use extreme caution while driving as there may be isolated slick spots on roads and bridges. Also, be aware that trees may continue to fall with the added weight of ice.

WINSTON COUNTY - Sales tax may have taken a dip due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but the resulting increase in taxes related to internet purchases is benefiting school systems for the first time, and in a big way.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Coinciding with the ad valorem taxes becoming due, the Winston County Revenue Commissioner’s office has a new person appointed as appraiser by the Winston County Commission. A familiar face to many, Shawn Blanton transferred from the road department to the chief appraiser position when Andy McSpadden resigned in September.

DELMAR - A bumpy ride promises to be smoothed out with a new hot mix asphalt. County Road 28, one of three routes that are between both U.S. Highway 278 to Highway 13 in Delmar, has recently had work done to its base on the Delmar half of the road, with those work areas then being chip sealed. New pavement will soon be added to that half, with striping added to the entire road.

WINSTON COUNTY - The Alabama Forestry Association brought good news to a recent Winston County Commission meeting, announcing a $500,000 project involving county crews to correct major drainage issues affecting stream beds in order to protect endangered wildlife.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Very few people actually enjoy wearing a facial covering to keep down the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and some defy any mandates, but those choices are trivial when it comes to the current state mandate requiring facial coverings be worn.

DUNCAN BRIDGE  - Seven months after state legislators brought news to Winston County, that the state would take over maintenance and upkeep of 60-year-old Duncan Bridge, the official transfer took place Monday, June 15, celebrated by congregating of state and local officials at the blue steel bridge spanning Smith Lake.

DOUBLE SPRINGS  - The Winston County Commission in an emergency meeting held Thursday morning, voted to declare a State of Emergency, enabling Chairman Roger Hayes to carry out routine and necessary operations and expenditures due to the coronavirus or COVID-19 restrictions being issued statewide.
