4-H'ers to compete in Pig Squeal Livestock Show and Auction

WINSTON COUNTY - Winston County 4-H’ers Justice Bowen, Braxten Cagle, Emma Johnson, Erin Tidwell and Elizabeth Treece will soon wrap up their Pig Squeal projects by showing the pigs they’ve raised at the North Alabama Pig Squeal Livestock Show and Auction, 10 a.m., April 29, at the Fayette County Multipurpose Complex, Fayette, Ala.

Double Springs installing license plate readers


Motorists traveling on all of Double Springs main roads, which all intersect at the above area of town, will soon be passing by cameras that read license plates and enter the numbers into a state database to help law enforcement. The exact location of the cameras has not been disclosed.
DOUBLE SPRINGS - A major tool to help the Double Springs Police Department work with other agencies has been approved by the Double Springs Town Council, with the purchase of Flock Safety’s license plate-reading cameras.

ARLEY - A year after the Arley Women’s Club celebrated its 50th anniversary, another 50-year event will be celebrated on Arley Day Saturday, May 20.

Forest officials looking at options regarding damaged Sipsey Rec Area bridge


The pedestrian lane of the bridge in the Sipsey Picnic Area was smashed by a falling tree during the high winds of March 3. The entire bridge is unsafe for all forms of traffic. With the lower parking lot and trailhead inaccessible, the U.S. Forest Service is assessing how to proceed.
BANKHEAD NATIONAL FOREST - The fate of the nearly 90-year-old bridge in the Sipsey River Picnic Area, which has been closed since it was damaged by a wind-felled tree on March 3, will not be known for some time.

Countywide cleanup day April 22

WINSTON COUNTY - The Winston County Commission has set Saturday, April 22, 2023, as County-wide Cleanup Day in coordination with County Transfer Station in Haleyville, Pace Inc. Landfill in Lynn and Hyche Landfill in Addison. Landfills will be open to the public for free from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Killen man charged with murder of Winston Career Academy teacher

DOUBLE SPRINGS - On March 27, around 7 p.m., Terry Wayne "Bubba" Lewis, 40, of Double Springs was struck and killed by a vehicle  on County Road 18 north of Double Springs in a rural area, noted Winston County Sheriff Caleb Snoddy.

The vehicle was driven by Christian Daniel Modas, 30, of Killen, who has been charged with murder and as of press time was in the Winston County Jail facing $1 million bond, Snoddy said.

The incident is under investigation by the sheriffs office. No further details will be given at this time.
