Suspect in Tuesday's officer shooting and standoff dead
DOUBLE SPRINGS - Jeffery Lee Adair, the suspect in the shooting of a Double Springs Police Department officer and ensuing standoff, has reportedly died at the Winston County Jail, where he was being held. No further details regarding his death have been released at this time.
At the Winston County Sheriff's Office's request, the State Bureau of Investigation will be handling the investigation into Adair's death, Winston County Sheriff Caleb Snoddy stated.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - Law enforcement and first responders from across a 50-mile area converged on a vehicle Tuesday night, Jan. 17, in a standoff/shootout situation after an armed motorist opened fire on officers while barricaded in his car.
Jeffery Lee Adair, 48, with an address listed of 301 Old Union Road, Haleyville, surrendered to authorities around 10 p.m., three hours after the initial standoff began, according to law enforcement agencies on the scene.

Miller inducted into honor society
ADDISON - Loryn Miller, a native of Addison, was recently initiated into the University of Alabama at Birmingham Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society.
Students initiated into the society must be sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate/professional students in the top 35 percent of their class, demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars and embrace the ODK ideals. Fewer than five percent of students on a campus are invited to join.

Storm damage reported after tornado-warned storm
Update, 1:07 p.m.: Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency have stated that County Roads 81 and 32 are now reopened to traffic. County Road 28 is still closed. Crews are currently on County Road 28 working to remove debris.
Update: The worst damage appears to be in the Ashridge area near the Henryfield community. The Alabamian has reporters in the area and will have more as it becomes available.
Winston County under tornado watch
The tornado watch has now been canceled for Winston County:
WINSTON COUNTY - Winston County has been placed, along with other counties in northwest and central Alabama, under a tornado watch, as a line of severe storms approaches the state. Only the main storm shelter at the Community Safe Room will be opened for the city of HALEYVILLE, announced Mayor Ken Sunseri. Storm shelters across the county are on standby to be opened if a warning is issued, reported Winston Emergency Management Director AJ Brown.
No garbage collection in Haleyville Monday
HALEYVILLE - The Haleyville Street & Sanitation Department will be closed Monday, Jan. 16, in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., holiday. Therefore, there will be no trash collection on that date.
Monday's garbage route will be collected on Tuesday, January 17, along with the regular Tuesday route.

BIRMINGHAM - JaMahl Payne, aka “Cubby Ragland”, formerly of Haleyville, executive chef at Civitas Restaurant in Mountain Brook, will be a featured guest on the daytime newscasts on WBRC Fox 6 Monday, Jan. 16, and on ABC 33/40’s “Talk of Alabama” Monday, Jan. 23, at 9 a.m. ABC 33/40 is on Channel 67 on DirecTV and on DISH channel 40.
