Storm spotters needed in Winston County, says Spann

WINSTON COUNTY - Meteorologist James Spann has urged Winston County residents to become volunteer storm spotters through the National Weather Service’s SKYWARN® program.

“We do not have enough storm spotters in Winston County,” Spann told an audience at the Haleyville Public Library recently.

Storm spotters alert the National Weather Service (NWS) to weather hazards, particularly severe thunderstorms.

Bear Creek wet/dry election set for November 15

BEAR CREEK - Figures from the last census showed the Town of Bear Creek exceeded 1,000 in population, meaning the town now qualifies - and is preparing for - an election to allow voters to decide if alcoholic beverages can be sold or distributed in the town limits.

Lynn Cemetery needs volunteers and donations

WINSTON COUNTY - More people who own plots or have loved ones buried in Lynn Cemetery, located off Long Street, need to help with the cemetery’s upkeep, according to Terry Fry and Neal Rose, members of the cemetery fund committee.

Haleyville’s Rocky Ravine trails to be improved

HALEYVILLE - Rocky Ravine is a beautiful green space near the heart of Haleyville, but the state of its trails has kept some residents from enjoying its splendor. Now, the trails at Rocky Ravine Park, one of which has been closed for years, and a trail leading into the ravine from City Lake may soon see improvements if the city of Haleyville receives an Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs' Recreational Trails Program grant for which it has applied.

Forester's grave at Winston Memorial desecrated; dozens more vandalized


Flags surrounding the grave of Sr.A Mark Forester, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010, are broken and destroyed, part of a desecration of his grave. Dozens of other graves were also vandalized by having their flowers stolen.
HALEYVILLE - The grave of Senior Airman Mark Forester was found desecrated Thursday afternoon, Sept. 15, when American flags were found scattered, poles splintered, iron poles bent and a cloth flag with Mark’s picture torn to shreds.
